In Helen Mirren’s defense, she didn’t know that she was starring in an adult film (the director added sex scenes to the film without her knowledge). Since then she has come a long way getting conferred with the title of “Dame”. She is one of the most celebrated and respected figures in not only the English industry but Hollywood as well, it’s hard to imagine such a poised and graceful woman to star in a porno. Well, such is the range of this brilliant actress, that anything is possible for her. One of the very few performer to have won the triple crown of acting, she started her acting career at the tender age of 22, appearing in plays staged by the Royal Shakespeare Company. Her quality of work and volume of work both have since augmented, making her the only actress to have won the BAFTA for three consecutive years.
Caligula is either the sexiest historical epic you'll ever see or the most sophisticated porno ever made...
You could argue that the main downside to the film is obviously the hardcore sex scenes. Yes, they were necessary to accurately depict this era of Rome, as well as Caligula's insane sexual appetite but sometimes the sex scenes go on too long or feel out of place. There are dicks, nude bodies and sex scenes all over the place in this film. Even in the background of most scenes there will just be people fucking. There were two particular scenes, the lesbian sex scenes in the hidden room and the long blowjob scene near the end that feel out of place and it seemed to be inserted to solely add porn to the film. This film is at least 30 minutes too long just from the sheer amount of hardcore sex scenes added in. They could’ve included some of these scenes to accurately tell the tale but the excess of sex scenes actually starts to become dull and drag the story out, when they aren't even necessary to the plot. Caligula is actually a very well plotted and interesting film, so it is a shame that it is cluttered up so much by the sex scenes.
Sexual depravity and orgies were the norm, as were horrific executions... Now we have shows on TV such as Game Of Thrones and Rome that depict incest, hardcore sex, nudity and strong violence, and these are the shows that are winning awards and critical praise (despite GOT’s disappointing final season)... on the other hand, people hated this film at the time because it had a lot of porn and splatter horror elements... Caligula was surely the grandaddy of this style.
A 2 and a half hour hardcore "educational" porno...
Somebody’s 8th grade history teacher recommended this film to them...
When most people think of this film, they think porn, wild nudity for the sake of it, etc. If you actually look past the nudity, this is a film about a man with so much power and it drives him insane. Nearly the whole film, Caligula does increasingly wild things in an attempt to really find the limit to his power but also in a sad grope for fulfillment and happiness - which he never achieves. From this perspective (nudity aside), this film is really true to Caligula's story and it’s kinda really tragic l. It's kind of beautiful in that sense.
An ever escalating orgy of madness that transcends its obvious and manifold flaws to become a grand and absurd comedy.
Featuring Malcolm McDowell lubing his fist and then shoving it up some dude's asshole (fistfucking him up the arse)...
This is the only feature film produced by Penthouse Magazine. Producer Bob Guccione (the founder of Penthouse), intended to produce an explicit pornographic film with a feature film narrative and high production values. He also cast Penthouse Pets as extras in unsimulated sex scenes filmed during post-production by himself and Giancarlo Lui. Bob hired screenwriter Gore Vidal to draft the film's script and Tinto Brass to direct the film. Tinto extensively altered Gore's original screenplay, leading Gore to disavow the film. The final screenplay focuses on the idea that "absolute power corrupts absolutely". However, both Tinto and Gore disagreed over Bob’s use of unsimulated sexual content, which Tinto refused to film. Because the producers did not allow Tinto to edit the film, they changed its tone and style significantly and added hardcore sex scenes not filmed by Tinto, thus turning Caligula into a pornographic drama that disregarded the director's intentions to present the film as a political satire. As a result, Tinto also disavowed the film. Caligula's release was met with legal issues and controversies over its violent and sexual content. Its uncut form remains banned in several countries. Although reviews were overwhelmingly negative (though Malcolm McDowell's performance as the eponymous character and Peter O'Toole's performance as Tiberius were praised), Caligula is now considered to be a cult classic in retrospect and its political content is considered to have significant merit. The script was later adapted into a novelization written by William Johnston under the pseudonym William Howard. In 2018, Penthouse announced that a new cut of the film was being edited by Alexander Tuschinski, with the approval of Brass's family.
