Walkabout was filmed in remote locations across the Australian outback in the summer of 1969. Although Girl is 14-years-old in the movie. Jenny Agutter was 16-years-old when the film was in production. Jenny Agutter was embarrassed when doing the scene of her swimming naked in the lake, so as many as possible of the crew were sent away. When shooting was done, they returned, stripped naked, and went for a swim.

Since that this film includes nudity from Jenny Agutter, who the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) surmised was 17 years old at the time of filming but she was 18 when the film came out.
